Explained:
Positive reinforcment

What is positive reinforcement?
Positive reinforcement in dog training is a method that focuses on rewarding behaviours you want to see more of, so your dog is encouraged to repeat them.
When a dog does something desirable—like sitting, coming when called, or walking calmly—you immediately reward them with something they enjoy. This could be treats, praise, toys, or play. The reward helps the dog understand, “That behaviour was a good choice.”
Why should we use positive reinforcement?
-
It adds something positive after a behaviour (that’s what “positive” means here).
-
It helps dogs learn faster because the experience is enjoyable and motivating.
-
It builds trust and confidence between the dog and the handler.
-
It avoids fear or intimidation, making training safer and more effective.
Types of positive reinforcement
High value treats

Dog treats work in training because they reward desired behaviour immediately, helping dogs learn faster. They motivate focus, make training positive and fun, and build trust between you and your dog. Over time, treats can be reduced and replaced with praise or play. Always use high value treats. Examples: chicken, cheese, pate or small biscuits.
Toys

Toys are great in training because they motivate play-driven dogs, make learning fun and engaging, and reward good behaviour without food. They also build focus, energy, and bonding, especially for active dogs. Examples: Rope toys, balls, frisbee
Physical affection

Physical affection helps in training because it reinforces good behaviour with comfort and praise, builds trust and bonding, and makes dogs feel safe and confident, especially dogs that love touch. Examples: Stroking, close contact, holding paws (if comfortable with it)
Play or games

Using play or games as reinforcement in dog training works because it’s fun, motivating, and natural for dogs. Play and games build a positive emotional connection, boosts engagement and focus, and reinforces behaviours without relying only on food—especially helpful for energetic dogs.
